Submission costs
As a community-driven non-profit organization, Dryad is committed to enabling the open availability and routine reuse of all research data. We strive to make high-quality data publishing affordable as well as easy. All our fees are set on a cost-recovery basis and designed to keep Dryad’s systems running strong, while putting our services within reach for as many researchers as possible.
Our Data Publishing Charge (DPC) is based on the variable costs of curating, publishing, and preserving a dataset.
Author fees
Authors affiliated with a Dryad partner will have their DPCs sponsored. (If your institution or journal is not yet a Dryad partner, please invite them to learn more).
Authors not affiliated with a Dryad partner organization are asked to pay a DPC by credit card at the time of submission. Invoices may be requested for an additional administration fee of $199 USD.

We are sensitive to the fact that fees for individual researchers are a burden and create inequities. To better accommodate researchers who lack funds to pay the Data Publishing Charge, we’ve expanded our waiver policy so that any author may request one. To submit your request for consideration, complete the Fee waiver application form. Waivers will not be approved for data submissions exceeding 10 GB.
Effective June 2024, Dryad's Data Publishing Charge cannot be paid using vouchers.
Refund policy
We aim to handle refund requests fairly and transparently. The specific cases in which a refund of the Data Publishing Charge (DPC) may be granted include:
- If it is determined that Dryad is unable to publish the dataset due to concerns involving sensitive data such as human subjects information (HSI) or species data, licensing conflicts, or other policy constraints.
- If the curation process has not yet started and the author(s) have decided to withdraw the data submission.
- If the metadata entered upon submission is incorrect or incomplete, and sponsorship of the DPC by a journal or institution was not confirmed before the author was charged.
In cases where a refund is approved, the DPC and any additional fees for large data will be refunded to the original method of payment. Please note that full refunds can only be processed before a dataset enters curation and Dryad incurs associated costs. In cases where the curation process has begun and a curator determines that Dryad cannot publish a submission for any reason, a $25 assessment fee may be applied, with the balance refunded to the original payment method.
Refund requests supported by a detailed explanation should be submitted to gro.dayrdatad@pleh for review and consideration. The administration fee associated with requests for an invoice is not refundable.
